Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - UN Year of the Elderly.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

601 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Education and Science the provisions or proposals, if any, he will introduce to mark the UN year of the elderly; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10175/99]

My Department is represented on the steering committee that has been established by the Department of Health and Children to oversee the International Year of Older Persons in Ireland.

The following initiatives are under consideration to commemorate the year: the dissemi nation to schools of leaflets and materials prepared by the National Council on Ageing; the inclusion in the second level transition year of activities designed to foster intergenerational solidarity between school students and older people; and making schools' information technology facilities available to the wider community, with special provision for older people, outside of school hours.
