Vol. 503 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cancer Screening Programme.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

36 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has satisfied himself in regard to the adequacy of cancer screening services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10563/99]

It is vital that the techniques used in screening for cancer are proved to be medically effective and accurate before screening programmes, covering large segments of the population, are introduced. Reliable screening techniques for breast cancer and cervical cancer are now well established internationally. In Ireland, the National Breast Screening Programme hopes to commence screening in the Autumn and a pilot screening programme for cervical cancer is at an advanced stage of preparation in the Mid-Western Health Board area. In both programmes, the emphasis is on quality so that the greatest possible impact can be made on deaths from these cancers.

I will keep the question of introducing screening programmes for other forms of cancer under review, having regard to the most up to date advice on the medical effectiveness of the available screening techniques. The National Cancer Forum, which advises me on all aspects of cancer services, will continue to have an important role in this regard.
