Vol. 503 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

John McGuinness

Question:

68 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if the case will be examined to determine if a person (details supplied), who operated the post office at Rathmoyle, County Kilkenny, for 43 years up to 1980, is entitled to a pension or benefit of any kind. [10618/99]

A postmaster-postmistress at a sub-office is a contractor rather than an employee and as such is not covered by the usual superannuation schemes. They can however receive payments under the An Post scheme for special termination payments (formerly the special fund of the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs).

A gratuity from the special fund was paid to the person concerned on retirement in 1980.
