Vol. 503 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Seán Power

Question:

118 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the cost of the old age pension budget increase in a full year; and the cost of increasing the old age pension to £100 a year. [10636/99]

The cost of the £6 per week increase provided in the 1999 Budget in the personal rates of old age, retirement and other pensions for those aged 66 and over amounts to some £100 million on a full year basis.

Following implementation of these increases, with effect from the beginning of June, the additional full year cost of further increasing the personal rates of old age contributory and retirement pensions by £11, to bring them up to £100 a week, would be approximately £82 million. A similar £11 increase in the personal rates of other pensions for those aged 66 and over would increase the overall cost to about £183 million in a full year.
