Vol. 503 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Assessment.

Ivan Yates

Question:

148 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Finance if a person (details supplied) in County Wexford will have his tax affairs clarified by the Revenue Commissioners in view of the fact his sole income is unemployment assistance; and the reason he keeps receiving correspondence in these circumstances. [10971/99]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that inquiries which the inspector of taxes has made indicate that no social welfare payments are being made to a person corresponding to the details supplied by the Deputy. The taxpayer is therefore still registered as self-employed and is consequently obliged to make annual returns of income to the inspector of taxes under the self-assessment system. Returns of the taxpayer's income are outstanding for the tax years 1988-89 to date.

If the taxpayer is no longer self-employed, he should contact his inspector of taxes who will be pleased to make any amendments necessary to the taxpayer's record.

Question:

149 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Finance if a person (details supplied) in County Wexford will have his tax affairs clarified by the Revenue Commissioners in view of the fact that his sole income is unemployment assistance; and the reason he keeps receiving correspondence in these circumstances. [10972/99]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer has not made a return of income since 1991-92 and did not inform the inspector of taxes about his circumstances.

The inspector has now updated the taxpayer's record so that (a) the taxpayer is regarded as being exempt from making income tax returns for the tax years 1992/93 to date and (b) all charges on record for those years are reduced to nil.
