Vol. 503 No. 6

Written Answers. - Traveller Accommodation.

Austin Deasy

Question:

197 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the rate of grant or subvention made available to local authorities to assist in the rehousing of travellers. [10902/99]

My Department provides 100 per cent capital funding to local authorities for the provision of halting sites, group housing schemes and single instance housing in special circumstances for travellers. A special grant of £3,000 is also provided through local authorities to travellers when purchasing or building a new house or purchasing a second hand house for the first time. A sum of £11 million has been provided in my Departments Estimates in 1999 for traveller specific accommodation. Travellers also continue to be accommodated under the standard local auth ority housing programme and travellers, who satisfy the eligibility requirements, may avail of the full range of housing options available under the social housing programme, for example, schemes for shared ownership or the provision of low cost sites for housing.
