Vol. 503 No. 6

Written Answers. - Boards of Management.

Question:

252 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, the Government has to introduce legislation which would require all service providers in the mental and physical handicapped area, to have parent representatives on the boards of management of various schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10753/99]

All special schools in the mental and physical handicapped area which are recognised by my Department are regarded as national schools. Consequently all such schools must comply with the provisions outlined in the booklet entitled "Boards of Management of National Schools – Constitution of Boards and Rules of Procedure". Section 3 of this booklet specifies that for schools having a recognised staff of more than one teacher, two parents of children enrolled in the school must be elected to the board of management.

The above provisions are consistent with section 14 of the Education Act, 1998.
