Brendan Howlin

Question:

56 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of litter wardens employed by each local authority; if he has satisfied himself that the numbers are sufficient to implement the Litter Pollution Act, 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10842/99]

Michael Ferris

Question:

86 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of prosecutions successfully taken by each local authority under the Litter Pollution Act, 1997; the number of fines imposed by each local authority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10839/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 56 and 86 together.

Detailed statistics concerning local authority enforcement of the litter legislation in 1997 and the first six months of 1998 are available in the Oireachtas Library. Figures for the second half of 1998 are currently being compiled and will be placed in the library as soon as they are available.

I am satisfied that local authorities are extending their use of the enhanced powers available to them under the legislation. However, I am in regular contact with the authorities to reinforce the need to further step-up and sustain action to combat litter pollution.
Information on the implementation of the Litter Pollution Act, 1997, generally, and on my programme of action to support strengthened performance, and promote public responsibility, in this area is contained in the reply to Priority Question No. 28 on today's Order Paper.
