Vol. 503 No. 7

Written Answers. - Rural Environment Protection Scheme.

Austin Deasy

Question:

34 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the REP scheme is having a positive result in protecting wildlife habitants such as wetlands, streams and overgrown glens and other areas covered by gorse and furze; if it is preventing the elimination of hedgerows; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11023/99]

It is my view that the REP scheme is having beneficial effects in the areas referred to by the Deputy including preventing the elimination of hedgerows. However, an evaluation of the REP scheme is being carried out at present and this will be completed by the end of June. This evaluation will provide an objective assessment of the effects of the REP scheme.
