Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Organisms.

Martin Brady

Question:

235 Mr. M. Brady asked the Minister for Health and Children his views on the recent decision by a supermarket to ban genetically modified foods from its own label products; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11611/99]

I am aware of the recent decision by this supermarket, as part of a European consortium, to source non-genetically modified soya and maize for its own label products. This decision was taken in response to perceived consumer concern about the genetic modification of food.

I am aware that some consumers wish to be in a position whereby they can decide whether or not they want to consume products containing genetically modified products. At present, EU Regulation 1139/98 provides for product labelling if genetically modified protein or DNA is present in the foodstuff. I will continue to push, at EU level, for maximum transparency in the labelling of these products.

The Deputy will be aware that Regulation 258/97 concerning novel foods and novel food ingredients provides for a pre-market approval system for novel foods, including genetically modified foods, throughout the European Union. No product consisting of or containing a genetically modified organism can be authorised for marketing in the European Union without first having undergone an appropriate safety assessment.

I have been aware of consumer concern about genetic modification for some time and I wish to assure the Deputy that I am keeping the matter of genetic modification of foodstuffs under continuing review and am determined to ensure that public health and the rights of the consumer are fully protected.
