Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Ivor Callely

Question:

274 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the concerns of residents regarding the speed and volume of motor vehicles through residential areas in the city of Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11282/99]

The matter raised by the Deputy has been brought to the attention of the Garda authorities.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the gardaí have received 179 complaints about speeding in residential areas in the Dublin metropolitan area for the period 1 April 1998 to 31 March 1999. In response to these complaints and, where speeding offences have been detected, the gardaí have taken the following measures: increased garda patrols, increased speed checks, issue of fines on the spot for speeding; roving checkpoints, high visibility checkpoints.

In addition, in co-operation with the relevant local authorities, the following traffic calming measures, designed to control speed and volume, have been implemented by local authorities in the Dublin area where appropriate: rumble strips, traffic ramps, weight restriction signs, changing of traffic signal sequence, provision of extra road signs.

I have been further informed by the Garda authorities that in the Dublin Metropolitan Area a total number of 21,438 fines on the spot for speeding were issued and there were 1,583 prosecutions for speeding offences for the period 1 April 1998 to 31 March 1999.

I have been assured by the Garda authorities that where speeding offences are detected appropriate action is taken.
