Question:

67 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if an inspector of prisons will be appointed to have regular independent assessments of conditions in our prisons made by a qualified person. [11530/99]

The position is that work is proceeding in my Department on the preparation of a prison service Bill which it is intended will, inter alia, provide for the establishment of a prisons inspectorate.
