Vol. 504 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tax Reliefs.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

85 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the interdepartmental group under the chairmanship of his department reviewing the disabled drivers' and disabled passengers' tax concessions was formed; the members of this group; the number of meetings held; the expected date of completion of the report; if public submissions were sought; the number of submissions received; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11849/99]

An interdepartmental group was established in April 1998 under the chairmanship of my Department with a view to determine what modifications, if any, might be proposed to the disabled drivers and disabled passengers (tax concessions) scheme which is administered by the Revenue Commissioners. In addition to the representative from my Department who was appointed chairperson, the group is comprised of a representative from the Department of Finance, the Department of Health and Children and the Revenue Commissioners.

While the interdepartmental group, which met on two occasions, did not request the public to make submissions, it will have regard to any submissions received in the matter. To date it has received two formal submissions and has available to it many items of correspondence concerning the operation of the scheme. Also, it will be meeting with representatives of a number of organisations that have indicated a wish to make an oral submission to the group. It is intended that the group will furnish its report for consideration by the Minister for Finance prior to the summer recess.
