Vol. 504 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these two topics separately and I will call the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. I call on Deputy Michael D. Higgins to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek leave to move the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of national importance: namely, the reported disappearance of files relating to the work of the Kennedy Committee into industrial and reformatory schools which reported in 1970.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

I have received notice of a second topic from Deputy Quinn. I call on Deputy Quinn to state his matter.

In accordance with the terms of Standing Order 31, I wish to give notice of my intention on the Order of Business today, Tuesday, to seek leave to move the suspension of the Dáil to consider the following matter of urgent public importance: the direct conflict between the statement made to the Dáil by the Taoiseach on 28 May 1998 and the testimony given to the Flood tribunal by the Tánaiste on Friday, May 7 1999 regarding the Taoiseach's knowledge of financial donations made to Mr. Ray Burke at the time he was nominated as Minister for Foreign Affairs by the Taoiseach in June 1997 and the need for the Taoiseach to make a statement to the Dáil clarifying the position.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
