Vol. 504 No. 5

Written Answers. - Firearms Legislation.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

149 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has for the review and reform of the Firearms Act, 1925. [12329/99]

Following a judgment of the High Court of 12 June 1998 in the judicial review regarding the granting of hunting licences and firearm certificates to tourists, I introduced amending legislation i.e. the Firearms (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1998. I also established the firearms legislation review group to consider the amendments necessary to the Firearms Acts, 1925 to 1990 consequent on the judgment.

Following consideration of the recommendations of the review group, I am at present preparing new legislation to revise the conditions in the Firearms Acts, 1925 to 1990, for the granting of firearm certificates to tourists.

I have no plans to amend the other provisions of the firearms legislation. However, the legislation is constantly kept under review by my Department.
