Vol. 504 No. 6

Written Answers. - Afforestation Programme.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

21 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the discussions, if any, he has had with other Departments in relation to the progress in completing a national soil survey to ensure that the Department's forestry policy can take into account the best use of local planting conditions when planting trees to avoid planting inappropriate species that may impact on bio-diversity and natural heritage; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12416/99]

The forest soils survey, a component of the forestry inventory and planning system, is a project which involves assessing satellite imagery, aerial photography, drift geology, topography, vegetation and previous soil surveys to create a forest soils classification for the country. As the Deputy is aware, the survey is being carried out by Teagasc on behalf of the forest service. The survey is not yet complete so its use in identifying areas sensitive to forestry does not arise at present. On completion, the survey will facilitate discussions with other interests including Government Departments, to evaluate the development of sustained forestry in the best locations and in the best environmental interests of the country.
