Vol. 504 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fishing Industry.

Ivor Callely

Question:

48 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the monetary value of the fishing industry in 1998; the estimated value in 1999; the value of exports for each of the years from 1993 to 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12478/99]

The monetary value of fish landings as a key indicator of the value of the catching sector, is estimated at £152 million in 1998. Total seafood exports (including aquaculture) to end November 1998 were worth £212 million. The estimated value of landings in 1999 is expected to be at least in line with the 1998 figures but will obviously depend on trends in markets and prices for whitefish, shellfish and pelagic species during the year. The value of exports for the years 1993 to 1998 is as follows:

£

1993

170,058

1994

185,315

1995

213,088

1996

252,459

1997

228,359

1998

212,011(to end November)

Question:

49 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the funding required for the development of the seafood industry in line with the national development plan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12479/99]

According to BIM's seafood industry agenda 2000-2006, achievement of the development targets and objectives for the sector over the period would require total investment of £364 million of which EU and Exchequer funding would contribute £198 million and the sector £166 million. Informed and supported by BIM's analysis, I am pursuing in the context of the current debate on national investment priorities, the necessary investment for the seafood sector in the next round.
