David Stanton

Question:

131 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the state of readiness of his Department with regard to the year 2000 computer issue; if he will report on the position in relation to hardware and software; if a statement of compliance of readiness has been issued; if not, if and when such a statement will be issued; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12589/99]

The Department is currently implementing its year 2000 compliance plan. This plan covers all IT hardware and software along with other office equipment and plant. The plan includes the following: close contact with suppliers, on-site testing and replacement/upgrading of any non-compliant hardware or software, in particular file servers and PCs and the office suite application.

In the context of the Department's quality customer care strategy, the remedial work required for the passport office is well advanced. The necessary hardware and software has been procured and is undergoing pre-implementation test ing. Work to ensure the continuity of internal services such as word processing, financial and personnel management systems etc., continues to progress.
Progress on the implementation of the Departments compliance plan is being closely monitored in conjunction with the interdepartmental year 2000 monitoring committee. The implementation of the compliance plan has been assigned the highest priority and additional staff have been allocated to the IT – communications unit to assist with the project.
I am satisfied that all the relevant Departmental systems will be compliant in good time. All projects of central importance to the Departments administrative and business functions are due for completion by 31 July 1999. Work required for marginal impact projects will be completed by 30 September 1999 following which the Department intends to make a statement on its compliance status.
