Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cancer Treatment Services.

Michael Ring

Question:

228 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to appoint additional theatre nurses and clinic specialist nurses to breast clinics nationwide to help reduce the waiting list; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12861/99]

I am aware of the need to have high quality diag nostic and symptomatic breast cancer services in this country. With the recent launch of "Breast Check", the national breast screening programme, due to commence in the autumn, I also announced that I was commissioning a review of the current diagnostic and symptomatic breast cancer services. I requested the National Cancer Forum to carry out the review and I understand that it has commenced the process of assessing the existing services and future needs in this area, on a nationwide basis.
