Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Richard Bruton

Question:

245 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the public education or publicity measures, if any, he has planned in order to promote a more responsible approach to waste management on the part of the general public, particularly in view of the adoption by the four Dublin local authorities of a new waste strategy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12542/99]

Local authorities are currently engaged in the making of waste management plans in accordance with the requirements of the Waste Management Act, 1996. These plans are required, inter alia, to address the promotion of public awareness and the dissemination of information and advice regarding waste prevention, minimisation and recovery. Advice in regard to public awareness programmes by local authorities in this context was contained in the waste policy statement Changing Our Ways published on 1 October 1998.

Tenders have recently been sought by my Department for the development of a major new environmental awareness campaign, which will promote key environmental messages, including waste prevention and minimisation.
