Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Accidents.

John Dennehy

Question:

258 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of cars registered in the Cork and Kerry region; and his views on whether the level of fatalities in this region differs significantly from the national average. [12766/99]

The number of cars registered in the Cork and Kerry region during 1997 was 181,431; the number nationally was 1,134,429.

Road Accident Facts Ireland 1997, published by the National Roads Authority, indicates that there were 63 road deaths in the Cork and Kerry region during 1997. The national total for that year was 472. Accordingly, the ratio of road deaths to cars registered in the Cork and Kerry region was 3.47 deaths per 10,000 cars compared to the national ratio of 4.16 deaths per 10,000 cars.
