Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - History Teaching.

Seán Haughey

Question:

334 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has satisfied himself that all secondary schools can provide history as a subject; if this is his objective; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12570/99]

At junior cycle, the "Rules and Programme for Secondary Schools" prescribes history as part of the required junior certificate curriculum for secondary schools. I am satisfied that all secondary schools can provide history as a subject in their junior certificate programme.

At leaving certificate level, history remains a recognised optional subject. However, almost all secondary schools offer history as an optional subject in their leaving certificate programmes.
