Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

103 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Taoiseach if application forms are available for millennium projects; and the closing date in this regard. [12563/99]

The national millennium committee. which is chaired by the Government Chief Whip and Minister of State, Seamus Brennan, TD, is to make recommendations to Government on project proposals of national significance for inclusion in the Government's millennium programme and also to recommend a system for supporting community, local, country or regional projects which will provide an opportunity for local communities, including supporting community, local, county or regional projects which will provide an opportunity for local communities. including in areas of disadvantage, to participate in the millennium commemoration.

The millennium committee advertised in the national press in January this year inviting the public to submit proposals for consideration as millennium projects. There were no application forms required. The millennium committee is currently considering the very large number of projects received as a result of the advertisement and continues to accept proposals.
In order to ensure the millennium funding is also available for locally based projects, the Government on the recommendation of the millennium committee, has approved a millennium recognition awards initiative. This initiative is to be administered by Area Development Management Limited, on behalf of the national millennium committee. The £1.9 million of millennium funding is to be made available for awards under this initiative. Details of the awards and availability of application forms will be announced shortly.
