Vol. 505 No. 5

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

129 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if a group (details supplied) in Dublin 12 will be granted sponsorship; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14115/99]

The position is that my Department currently provides funding to recognised National Governing Bodies of Sport towards costs associated with administration, international competition and training, hosting international events, organisation development and the purchase of equipment. In 1998 the Schoolgirls Basketball Association of Ireland merged with the Irish Basketball Association to form one national body to oversee the sport of basketball.

Earlier this year, following receipt of an application from the IBA a grant allocation was made to the new body, on the recommendation of the Irish Sports Council, in respect of its projected expenditure for 1999. It is a matter for the IBA to prioritise the individual items of its programme of expenditure for 1999, including any funding towards schoolgirls basketball.
