Vol. 505 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Building Project.

Liam Aylward

Question:

142 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in having approval issued to the board of management of Christian Brothers secondary school, James's Street, Kilkenny, for grant aid of a project already outlined in detail to his Department. [14182/99]

Christian Brothers secondary school, James Street, Kilkenny has made an application to my Department's planning and building unit for the provision of a PE hall.

It is the policy of my Department to provide physical education halls as part of the schedule of accommodation for all new post primary schools. A PE hall is also provided when a major extension to a school, which does not have such a facility is being built. In addition, my Department has a programme for providing PE halls as stand-alone projects at post-primary schools which do not already have this facility and a number of such projects have proceeded to construction in recent years.

The question of providing a PE hall at Christian Brothers secondary school, James' Street, Kilkenny can only be considered in the context of capital available for post-primary building purposes.
It is not possible in the present circumstances to indicate when architectural planning of a PE hall at Christian Brothers secondary school, Kilkenny will commence. The application will continue to be reviewed.
