Vol. 505 No. 5

Written Answers. - Private Bus Sector.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Question:

69 Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Finance the PAYE and PRSI contributions to the Exchequer from the private bus sector in each of the years 1997 and 1998. [14094/99]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that statistics are not recorded in such a manner as would enable the precise information requested by the Deputy to be provided. The only relevant information available is an analysis of the tax returns for the income tax year 1996-97, the latest available, which indicates that a tax liability of £19.6 million arose for that year in respect of some 4,598 individuals who were identified as having income from employment in the operation of various forms of urban transport such as urban railways and general road transport such as public and private regular bus and motor coach services.

Other individuals on tax records may also have income from the same activities but are not so identified in the statistics.

Corresponding information in respect of PRSI could not be obtained without undertaking inquiries which could be carried out only at disproportionate cost.
