Vol. 505 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Closures.

Michael Ring

Question:

105 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if Carrowmore national school, Lackan, Ballina, County Mayo, will be kept open for one more year until the children finish their primary education. [14668/99]

The management authorities of Carrowmore primary school were informed in March 1999 of my Department's intention to withdraw grants from the school, with effect from the end of the current school year, because of an insufficiency of pupil numbers. The enrolment in the school this year has fallen to only three pupils, two in fifth class and one in third class.

A request has been received in my Department to allow the school to continue to operate for one more year until the fifth class pupils have completed their primary school education.

The matter is being reviewed in the planning section of my Department.
