Vol. 505 No. 7

Written Answers. - General Practitioner Cover.

Jackie Healy-Rae

Question:

73 Mr. Healy-Rae asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will appoint a doctor to Waterville, County Kerry, to deal with the emergency situation which has arisen leaving one doctor to cover a large area usually covered by three doctors; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14685/99]

The provision of appropriate GP cover in Waterville is a matter for the Southern Health Board. I understand from the board that there are two doctors in partnership who hold GMS contracts in Waterville. Currently they are away, during which time they have employed a locum to cover their practice. That locum is now in the process of being appointed to the practice as an assistant with a view to partnership. The Southern Health Board is satisfied that adequate GP cover is available in the Waterville area.
