Vol. 506 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Pay.

Richard Bruton

Question:

84 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the consideration, if any, he has given to the possibility of full union membership for the Garda and participation in social partnership arrangements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14801/99]

Following discussions, under the auspices of the Department of the Taoiseach and with the participation of officials from the Department of Finance and my own Department, both the Garda Representative Association and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors entered into discussions with ICTU regarding the development of arrangements which would provide the Garda associations with a meaningful input into the discussions which lead to national programmes and the pay agreements which form part of those programmes.

I will be prepared to give consideration to any proposals, to facilitate a meaningful input by the Garda associations into national talks, which might emanate from the discussions with ICTU.
