Vol. 506 No. 2

Written Answers. - International Year of the Elderly.

Richard Bruton

Question:

436 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to mark the international year of the elderly. [15197/99]

My Department is represented on the steering committee that has been established by the Department of Health and Children to oversee the International Year for Older Persons in Ireland.

The following initiatives are under consideration to commemorate the year: the dissemination to schools of leaflets and materials prepared by the National Council on Ageing; the inclusion in the second-level transition year of activities designed to foster intergenerational solidarity between school students and older people; making schools' information technology facilities available to the wider community, with special provision for older people, outside of school hours; the insertion in the primary school curriculum of a module on the ageing process and on older people.
