Vol. 506 No. 5

Written Answers. - Taxi Regulations.

Paul McGrath

Question:

216 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the Garda Commissioner's Office will sanction taxi ranks for Mullingar and Athlone, County Westmeath. [15997/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Athlone Appointed Stands (Street Service Vehicles) By-laws were signed by the commissioner on 31 May 1999 and sent to the Minister for the Environment and Local Government for his consent and signature on 1 June 1999. I understand the Minister for the Environment and Local Government must retain the by-laws for one month from that date before he signs them.

With regard to the position in Mullingar, I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the gardaí are involved in the process of making by-laws to provide for appointed stands in the town of Mullingar and communications have taken place between the gardaí and Westmeath County Council in this regard.
I wish to assure the Deputy that every effort is being made by the gardaí to bring the matter to a conclusion as soon as possible.
