Vol. 507 No. 1

Written Answers. - Visa Applications.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

100 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that, in accepting a permanent position as lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, UCD, a person (details supplied) was assured that his daughter would be able to reside with him but a visa application in respect of her has been refused; his views on whether it is equitable or compatible with Irish family values that this man should be deprived of his parenting rights while residing here; if he will review this visa application; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16190/99]

My Department has no knowledge of any assurance given to the person concerned as set out in the question. Having checked the visa application it appears that the type of visa requested was for the purpose of study in the State. Accordingly, the said application was processed in line without student visa guidelines. In light of the Deputy's question, my Department will now review the application.
