243 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the context in which his Department recently inserted advertisements in the national press asking for representations on proposed changes in gambling legislation; the assurance, if any, he will give that no change is contemplated in legislation which will allow the establishment of casinos; and if he will make a statement on the matter. On foot of a commitment contained in my Department's strategy statement for the years 1998 to 2000, I have recently established an interdepartmental group to undertake a review the 1956 Gaming and Lotteries Act.
The advertisements to which the Deputy refers were placed in order to facilitate members of the public and interested parties who may wish to contribute to the process. There are no specific proposals for legislative change in this area at present in my Department. Any such proposals which may emerge from the review process will be brought forward for debate in the normal manner.
