Vol. 507 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Austin Currie

Question:

287 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science the action, if any, he will take to ensure that children who have been refused enrolment in Castleknock community college in September 2000 will be enrolled in circumstances where phase two was due to have been completed in time for enrolment in September 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16564/99]

Phase two of the development of Castleknock Community College, which is scheduled for completion later this year, will increase the capacity of the school to 1,100 pupils.

My Department has been in contact with County Dublin VEC and, as a result, I am satisfied that the school's enrolment policy will ensure that its increased capacity will be maximised.

Generally, my policy is to ensure that all of the schools in an area can, between them, accommodate all of the pupils presenting for enrolment. This is not to say, however, that all pupils will gain admission to the school of first choice.

I am conscious that there is considerable development in the Dublin 15 area and I can assure the Deputy that my Department is monitoring the position closely, in consultation with Fingal County Council.
