The general functions of An Bord Bia, as set out in section 7 of An Bord Bia Act, 1994, are to promote, assist and develop in any manner which the board considers necessary or desirable the marketing of Irish food and livestock. The Act also contains a non-exhaustive list of particular functions which are without prejudice to the generality of section 7 and, in addition, it confers on the board all such powers as are necessary or expedient for its functions.
The report of the beef task force contains a number of recommendations relating to market development and proposals for the involvement of An Bord Bia in the implementation of these. Those recommendations and proposals are currently being examined in detail but, even at this early stage, it is my view that acceptance of them would not necessitate altering An Bord Bia's existing statutory remit.
