Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Plant Protection Products.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

266 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on whether a spray (details supplied) should be banned particularly in the control of weeds in woodlands. [17215/99]

A small number of plant protection products containing lindane are permitted for use in the control of insects, as a seed dressing and in timber preservation. Lindane is currently being reviewed at EU level in the context of Council Directive 91/414/EEC on the Authorisation of Plant Protection Products and a decision on its future use will be taken when the results of this review are available later this year. The use of plant protection products in forestry, woodlands and amenity areas is the responsibility of the Departments of the Marine and Natural Resources; Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, and the Environment and Local Government.
