Written Answers. - Anti-smoking Campaigns.

Alan Shatter

Question:

490 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the moneys spent by his Department in each of the past 30 years in departmental advertising or other departmental promotions regarding the health risk of smoking; the moneys paid out by his Department by way of grants in each of the past thirty years to health boards or non-governmental organisations to engage in anti-smoking campaigns or to undertake other appropriate action to discourage smoking; and the reason this information, as first sought by way of Parliamentary Question No. 230 on the 18 May 1999, has not yet been furnished. [17889/99]

I regret the delay in responding to the Deputy's Parliamentary Question No. 230 of the 18 May 1999, but I am sure you will understand a significant amount of investigative work was required to ascertain if details of the expenditure on anti-smoking measures was available. I have responded in detail to the Deputy by letter dated 27 September 1999.
