Question:500 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of persons who have died as a consequence of HIV infection in each of the past ten years. [17910/99]
Written Answers. - HIV Infection.
The human immuno-deficiency virus, HIV, attacks the body's immune system and makes it vulnerable to various infections. A person infected with the virus is said to be HIV antibody positive. Up to the end of May 1999 there was a total of 2,062 reported cases of HIV in Ireland.
When a person is infected with HIV they may go on to develop other diseases and when these diseases are found to be present the person is diagnosed as having AIDS, acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Up to the end of July 1999 there were 682 reported cases of AIDS in Ireland and the number of reported deaths from AIDS at that date was 344.
The information requested by the Deputy on deaths over the past ten years is tabled below.
