Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Child Care Services.

John Perry

Question:

539 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Health and Children if the necessary funds will be allocated through the North-Western Health Board for a community play group (details supplied) in County Sligo which is endeavouring to provide a high standard of child care services in a rural disadvantaged region and is vital for the further development of the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18384/99]

Health boards provide financial support to a range of day care services which cater for children who are regarded as being at risk or disadvantaged. These services include parent and toddler groups, community playgroups and drop-in centres. This function is in keeping with the boards' overall responsibilities under the Child Care Act, 1991, in regard to the promotion of the welfare of children and provision of family support services.

I have asked the chief executive officer of the North-Western Health Board to investigate the position in relation to this case and to reply directly to the Deputy as a matter of urgency.
