Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Services.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

804 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Donegal who suffers from Down's syndrome is entitled to a remedial service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17233/99]

The school attended by the pupil in question has the services of a remedial teacher and a resource teacher.

Resource teachers cater for the needs of pupils, including the pupil in question, who have been assessed as having special educational needs. Remedial teachers cater for pupils who have a low attainment level in literacy and numeracy skills. The pupil referred to by the Deputy is included in the caseload of the resource teacher.

I understand that the school authorities have sought special needs assistant support and a computer for the child in question. My Department's Inspectorate is considering this application at present.
