Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

841 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will consider the school transport needs of persons (details supplied) in Dublin 6W; if he will assist in resolving this difficulty; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17600/99]

The school transport scheme was designed to provide a basic service for all eligible pupils who might, otherwise, find it difficult to attend school regularly. It was not designed to provide a door to door service. Bus Éireann operate the day to day running of the scheme on behalf of my Department.

The school transport scheme does not generally operate in the greater Dublin area where most children live less than the required distance from their nearest school. School transport in the Dublin area is generally operated within the network of public scheduled services under the remit of Dublin Bus, who has responsibility for all aspects of this service.

I have asked the school transport section of my Department to seek further details from the person in question with a view to having the matter investigated. I will advise the Deputy of the outcome in due course.
