Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Ring

Question:

845 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if a special concession for school transport can be arranged for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo with a congenital condition which precludes her from walking one and a quarter miles to school. [17388/99]

I wish to advise the Deputy that the medical evidence previously submitted in this case was forwarded to my Department's medical adviser who determined that the pupils condition would not prevent her from making her own way to the pick-up point.

Based on a distance of 1.2 miles from the route of service, the pupil was considered to have a reasonable level of service in the context of the general operation of the scheme. Under existing guidelines my Department strives to ensure that no eligible post-primary pupil will have more than three miles to travel to a pick-up point.

However, I am concerned about this person's case and I have asked that the matter be reviewed as a matter of urgency. The Deputy will be informed of the outcome.
