Question:

890 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science the position concerning the proposed sports hall at Palmerstown community school, Dublin 20; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17886/99]

My Department is currently proceeding with the architectural planning of a stand-alone sports hall for Palmerstown community school. The proposed sports hall will have a physical education hall of 608 metres square, together with an ancillary area of 104 metres square and associated additional accommodation. An amended stage 2/3 submission is currently awaited from the design team in this case.

Question:

891 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science whether he has received representations from the school action group of the proposed school at Little Pace and Castaheany, Dublin 15, concerning an increase from 16 to 32 classrooms and expressing concern that the deadline for the school opening of September 2000 might be delayed because of problems over the site purchase; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17888/99]

My Department recently approved the provision of a new 16 classroom national school at Castaheany, Dublin 15, and the school authorities are currently in the process of negotiating the site purchase on behalf of my Department. Representations from the school action group were received in my Department recently concerning the amount of accommodation which should be provided. In this regard, my Department considers the provision of a 16 classroom school adequate for the short-term needs. However, the site will allow for the provision of additional accommodation, if required, at a later stage.
