Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Early Childhood Education.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

919 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the percentage of three to six year olds who are in publicly funded early childhood education. [18133/99]

Based on population Estimates supplied by the Central Statistics Office for January 1998 and data available to my Department for 1997/98 the percentage of 3-6 year olds in publicly funded education is as follows:

Age

3

4

5

6

3.16 per cent

52.21 per cent

99.07 per cent

99.25 per cent

The figures include those 3 and 4 year olds who attend early start and travellers pre-school programmes (representing 2.72 per cent of 3 year olds and 1.49 per cent of 4 year olds) and those aged 3-6 years enrolled in national schools. They do not include the considerable numbers involved in places supported through other Departments.
