Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Kyoto Protocol.

John Gormley

Question:

143 Mr. Gormley asked the Taoiseach the role the CSO will play to seek compliance with the Kyoto Protocol on climate change; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18294/99]

The Environmental Protection Agency is the responsible authority for compiling the inventories of Ireland's emissions of greenhouse gases, as required under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change–UNFCCC. This is done on the basis of official activity data supplied from a number of sources, including the CSO. It is expected that the EPA will continue to be responsible for compiling the emissions inventories once the Kyoto Protocol enters into force. The CSO will continue to examine the data requirements necessary to support the EPA in this function, as appropriate.
