Alan Shatter

Question:

243 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 491 on 29 September 1999, he will give details of the steps taken since December 1998 to obtain from companies (details supplied) details of the ingredients used by them in their tobacco products. [19081/99]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 213 and 243 together.

Tobacco companies were first requested to notify me of details of constituents used in all brands of tobacco products on 16 June 1998. Some information was supplied in composite format on 23 December 1998, copies of which have been forwarded previously to the Deputy.

I have referred the composite reply of 23 December by the industry to the Attorney General for consideration and the matter is ongoing. The case of the specific companies which have not provided any information in the composite format has also been referred to the Attorney General.
