[18652/99]

Mr. Higgins(Dublin West) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, the Government has for ratifying the Aarhus Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters to which Ireland is a signatory. Question:

258 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the legislative amendments, if any, which will be required to bring Irish legislation into line with the provisions of the Aarhus Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters; and the Government's timeframe for introducing those amendments. [18651/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 246, 257 and 258 together.

My Department continues to work towards early ratification of the convention in consultation with other relevant Departments. A range of legislative and technical issues are under consideration and the process will take some time to complete. Ireland was not represented at the conference in Moldova.
