Vol. 508 No. 3

Written Answers - Local Government Elections.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

87 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received correspondence from candidates in the recent elections for Castleblayney UDC alleging improper registration of voters in Castleblayney; if so, his response to the correspondence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17917/99]

Correspondence from a candidate at the recent election to Castleblayney Urban District Council concerning the register of electors was forwarded to my office by the Taoiseach's office on 3 June 1999. On receipt of the correspondence my Department requested a report from Monaghan County Council in relation to the matters raised. A reply issued from my office to the candidate on 1 July 1999 indicating that responsibility for the compilation of the register of electors is a matter for the registration authority and one in which I have no direct function. A copy of the report prepared by Monaghan County Council was also enclosed with the reply and I will make a copy of this report available to the Deputy.
