Vol. 508 No. 4

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Tony Gregory

Question:

212 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will consider the acquisition from the developers (details supplied) of Monastery Chapel of St. Alphonsus, Dublin 9, which is a listed building. [19296/99]

The Monastery Chapel of St. Alphonsus is of architectural significance. Although it is a listed building I understand that the interior is not listed in the 1999 Dublin city development plan. It is not normal for the State to acquire such buildings and the system for the protection of the architectural heritage is through the planning code. Nevertheless, in this instance discussions are taking place with the representatives of the developers to see how best the chapel might be protected.
