Vol. 508 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

38 Mr. Quinn asked the Taoiseach if an investigation is being carried out into the possible misappropriation of a cheque for £100,000 within the Chief State Solicitor's office; if so, the current position on the investigation; the changes, if any, to administrative procedures within this office introduced as a result; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18904/99]

The gardaí have almost completed an investigation in the Chief State Solicitor's office into alleged misappropriation of cheques over a period of years. The total value of the cheques involved has not been finally determined.

Following a preliminary review of payment control procedures, new computer based checking routines were put in place in the general accounts area. A more detailed review of procedures will be conducted when the results of the Garda investigation become available.
